MSD80 to MSD81 Upgrade
We offer the most robust MSD80 to MSD81 conversion in the industry!
Process
(A) You mail in your DME (if it can be scanned) and we program your replacement DME and mail both back
(B) Remote reading; where we read your immobilizer data remotely (must have a windows laptop and a K+DCAN cable) and we program a replacement we have on hand and ship it within 1 business day (remote programming immobilizer data can not happen it requires physical intervention and the replacement must be benched)
(C) Remote read and you send or have sent the replacement and we will program and ship once received (this is mostly for owners doing proactive maintenance and not wanting to have the down time on their car)
(D) In person- If you have a shop or live within 30 minutes from Murfreesboro TN we can come to a public location or the shop where your vehicle is located and program the replacement real time. (subject to scheduling and times)
What is included with the service?
The Permanent VIN will be matched to your car (This VIN can not be changed by flashing this is the VIN MHD displays)
Firmware both factory and current will match your specific vehicle application
injector calibration will be written (no need to provide we will obtain from the original DME)
Coding will match your vehicle (please see ** at the bottom that goes into the importance of this)
Background
Often the DME (Engine Control Module) named MSD80 in BMW cars equipped with the Twin Turbo N54 Engine Found in the sales years of 2007-2009 in the BMW 135i, 335i,335xi,535i,535xi,X6 35xi and Z4 35i fails without warning. The ECU model is the MSD80. When this happens this can result in a few different symptoms.
(1) Engine only running on 3 cylinders
(2) Engine is down a specific cylinder
(3) Water pump runs non stop soon as the key is inserted in the vehicle or the door is open.
(4) Car will only crank but will not start.
Common fault codes during failure but not limited to are 30BA, 30BB, 2E30, 2E31, 2E32, 2E33, 2E34, 2E35, 29CD, 29CE, 29CF, 29D0, 29D1, 29D2 along with BSD failure.
There are a many points of failure on the MSD80 DME which made BMW and Continental quickly worked together to develop the MSD81 DME which address all the failure points of the MSD80. When the MSD80 is tuned this often can progress to failure very quickly as well especially when upgrade ignition coils are added. A MSD81 is a MUST if you plan on having the peace of mind whether you decide to keep your car in stock form, add big power or even doing a DCT swap.
**Correct Coding and Why it is Critical
There are 2 different type of OBD protocols that the MSD80 and MSD81 can have. This is based on production date. Different models have different change over dates.
When the OBD protocol is wrong all BMW scan tools or tools that use BMW protocols like Snap-On, Autel, Topdon, MHD, Bimmergeeks Protool, Carly, Bimmlink and BMW dealer software such as ISTA will all communicate fine, however state inspections use generic OBD protocols and those will not be able to talk to the vehicle preventing the vehicle to pass inspection. Also this coding is considered permanent and is only able to modified when the DME is new. We make sure that you do not experience this by completing the coding correctly for your vehicle so all functions are factory! If you have had a MSD80 to MSD81 upgrade from somewhere else and wish to correct this we offer a post upgrade correction service.
*** If you have MHD and wish to tune your replacement DME for off-road use. There will be no issue doing so and keeping your purchases. If you have a customer tune the ROM the MSD80 uses IA80S is not compatible with the MSD81 that uses ROMs IJE0S, INA0S or IKM0S since the location of the tables are different ROM to ROM. You will need to reach to your tuner to convert your file. Some may charge for this others may do it for free but I always encourage if they do it for free tip the tuner anyway! Since it can be a lengthy process for them!
****When shipping in your product for service, we strongly recommend insuring it for the total cost of replacement to safeguard against any potential loss or damage during transit. Your peace of mind is our priority, and taking this extra precaution can provide added assurance throughout the servicing process.
